Week Four

This week was a bit slower for me.

I had prearranged with both Trent & folks at the BVMC that I would be unable to visit the site this week.

On Wednesday, we closed on our house & earlier in the week I a family member had major surgery, both of which diverted significant attention.

However, work still continued, albeit somewhat slowed.

Trent went to a digitization training session/workshop at UCF’s Center for Humanities and Digital Research (CHDR) that included learning about the Titan high-res scanner.

Trent and I will debrief about that one day next week & I will circle back with folks at CHDR to catch up on information they shared that will be relevant.

To that point, I’m joining Sarah Boye on 6/7 in Greenwood cemetery to see a ground penetrating radar study (GPR). Folks from CHDR will be participating to document/preserve other elements while Terracon Consultants Inc. performs the actual GPR tasks.

This will be a good opportunity to reconnect with relevant CHDR faculty and perhaps get some assistance producing higher quality 3d scans of some objects at BVMC in lieu of “just” photogrammetric models.

I have continued to tinker with my existing photo/datasets to mess with models in Agisoft Metashape of things I’ve already photographed at BVMC and continued to practice stitching two halves of models together as described in last week’s post.

I will upgrade my license for Metashape to the more robust version of the program to enable a few tools to be more easily used. I will also begin investigating workflows in both Meshroom and Reality Capture to see if either support a turntable-based photography mechanism similar to what I have been working with thus far.

I will also begin working on designing or adapting a “low-fi” workflow that produces quick but “okay” results in hopes that I can create a method that BVMC volunteers can tackle when they get new objects they would like to share themselves without the need for my involvement in the future.

I’m interested to see what sort of objects the BVMC curator might also choose for us.

I am planning to meet on Wednesday (or another day next week if schedules require) with a contact who used to own a photography store in Cocoa Village and who is a professional photographer to get some tips on what sort of workflow might work from a photography standpoint. Admittedly, I do know that his idea of a good photograph (composition, artistic value, etc) are considerably different than mine (mostly object in frame for raw data with no consideration for artistic value), but he will hopefully still be able to share some good insight about lighting and equipment choices.
